Glossary

1st what is a BASIC WEBSITE. This term does not mean it has to be boring. It can still be very interactive with the viewer. Basic and simple just means a fuss free layout without the need for moving pictures or animation. It also refers to a site that is NOT an e-commerce site with shopping basket or databases.

DOMAIN NAME -- This is the name of a website. This websites domain name is www.basicwebsite-designs.co.uk it is like a fingerprint no two websites can have the same domain name. You will choose a name for your website I then will check its availability and if no one else has it I will be able to register it for you.

.co.uk or .com or .org -- If you are trading or live in the UK it is customary to have a .co.uk similarly France use .co.fr and Germany .co.de The most used is the .com you can still have if in UK but it is usually kept for the larger and more commercial business also most American websites are .com. A .org is usually for small groups and organisations often within the volunteer sector.

HOSTING -- ALL websites have to be hosted. Large hosting companies have large computers known as servers where your website information will sit until someone calls up the name on their computer when it is then served up to them. For the information to be kept on the server there is a yearly charge. I can arrange and manage the hosting for your website.

HOMEPAGE -- Is the first page or main page of your website that is brought up when someone types in the domain name of your website. Within the homepage of a website is the links to other pages of the site.

EMAIL FORWARDING -- For your website to look professional you will have an email which corresponds to the name of your website like: info@yourwebsitename.co.uk so people will use this email address but I will have it redirected to what ever email you have whether it be with hotmail, yahoo, an email used on outlook.

HOLDING PAGE -- This is a page I make just showing your contact details and short explanation of what the website will have to offer. This can only be done once hosting has been arranged and gives an immediate web presence.

FLASH -- This is the name commonly used for websites that have a lot of flashing graphics, often at the start. It is also the name referred to sites that have animation. This is good but not everyone who may look at your website will have a fast computer so these sites can often take a long time to load and the viewer may give up before the site is fully loaded.

JPEG -- (pronounced JAY-peg) and stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group and is the technique of formatting an image and compressing it for the Internet so it takes up less space and less time to download.

E-COMMERCE -- This is what a website is referred to that has a shopping cart and makes sales directly from the website.

BLOG -- Derived from the words Web Log. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as personal diaries. Many are free to have and they are maintained by the individual you can add pictures to them as well and are similar to a website.

GO LIVE!!!! -- Is when your website is uploaded to the host servers and then available for all the world to see if they type in the domain name of your website. If I build your website pages initially are only viewed by you. I will send you links via email so you can view them. The whole site will not GO LIVE until had your full approval.
